'High School Musical' Director Kenny Ortega Ready for 'Dirty Dancing'

Dirty Dancing / Kenny Ortega
With the remake of the 1984 dance driven romance Footloose poised to hit theaters on October 14th, another dance-centric film from the 80's will be getting the remake treatment now as well. Deadline reports the 1987 film Dirty Dancing, the romance that has been so engrained in everyone's cinematic memory thanks to a recognizable soundtrack, the late Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, will be remade by High School Musical and This Is It documentary director Kenny Ortega. What makes this interesting is that Ortega is responsible for choreographing the so-called dirty dancing from the original film.
Honestly, there are few people I would trust with a remake like this, and Ortega really does seem like one of them. His expertise with dancing, musical numbers and gearing content towards the younger generation makes him a prime candidate to craft a respectable and fun update of the original film, but I can't say that I'm too thrilled with another call back to the 80's for inspiration in this decade. For those who are unfamiliar, the original story follows a pampered young girl who summers with her upscale family at an establishment in the Catskills and falls in love with the resident dance instructor who her family does not approve of in the least.
The infamous "Nobody puts Baby in a corner" line comes directly from the film, and surely it will have to be worked into the remake somehow, but a part of me wishes this remake would be left in a corner. Of course, depending on how the story is updated, this could turn out all right. However, Lionsgate is behind this remake, so they need to make sure this turns out better than their weaksauce Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, sequel that was just a complete disaster all around.
